SEBASTIEN
The Wood Lab is currently seeking participants for the SEBASTIEN study (Schema, Emotion and Behavior-focused Therapy for Children). Under the leadership of Jeffrey Wood, Ph.D., this study tests a promising, experimental treatment designed to reduce core autism symptoms in school-aged children (6-13 years old) with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). SEBASTIEN research participants are randomly assigned to one of treatment groups: one program is experimental and addresses perspective taking skills, initiating and responding to others, and becoming flexible and tolerant of changes in routine. The other program is based on standard community treatment approaches commonly used for children with ASD. Both treatment programs last for 32 weeks and both will provide parent training to encourage the continued development of new skills. Families that choose to participate contribute to the identification of novel interventions to reduce the severity of core autism symptoms. The current study is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Autism Speaks. All procedures are approved by the UCLA Institutional Review Board.
